Joint Health: Will Glucosamine and Chondroitin Help Joint Pain?

If you are looking for a supplement that can relieve joint pain, glucosamine and chondroitin may be the answer for you. These two compounds are often combined in a single supplement and presumably help in the fight against osteoarthritis. But don’t hope too high. Some studies show that they provide relief for mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis, but others show that they are of little value in reducing knee pain in osteoarthritis. However, it is worth a try and they may also work for other joint media.

What are glucosamine and chondroitin?

Glucosamine and chondroitin are natural chemical compounds found in your body. The glucosamine in your body helps maintain the health of your cartilage, that rubbery soft tissue that cushions the bones where they meet at the joints. As we age, our glucosamine levels decrease and this leads to a breakdown of the cartilage, which in turn leads to the pain of bone grinding on the bone or osteoarthritis.

Glucosamine supplements are made from shellfish, so be careful if you are allergic. Chondroitin can come from natural sources, such as shark or bovine cartilage, or it can be artificially produced in the laboratory. Glucosamine and chondroitin are available in tablets, capsules, powder or in liquid form and are often taken in combination with each other or in combination with other food supplements. Cartilage can also disappear due to joint or repeated stress injury, and is often found in high-performance athletes and weekend warriors.

Risks and dosage of glucosamine / chondroitin

As a rule, glucosamine is a fairly safe supplement. Any side effects can include abdominal pain, headache, drowsiness or heartburn. As mentioned above, if you have a shellfish allergy this is not the supplement for you! If you have heart or kidney disease, hypertension, bleeding disorders or diabetes, consult your doctor before taking glucosamine and note that it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or for children, just because there is no & there there is still sufficient evidence as to whether it is safe for these groups or not.

For adults over the age of 18, an initial dose of 1500 mg of glucosamine and 1200 of chondroitin per day for one or two months is considered safe. If a positive response is obtained after two months, the dose can be reduced to 1000 mg of glucosamine and 800 or less of chondroitin, and you and your doctor will need to refine the dosage together.
