Food intolerances and allergies: is it only in your head?

Food intolerance has become a serious health problem today, dividing conventional and alternative medicine.

1. Are we a group of hypochondriacs?

“A surprising 45% of us believe we are allergic to basic foodstuffs such as wheat and dairy products, causing anything from headaches to bloating and insomnia.” (1)
So how do we get to a phase of intestinal permeability?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is thought to occur through one of the most common digestive problems.

2. Definitions

Allergy to food – It is a genetic condition that affects around 2% of the population. The reaction to food can range from a rash to something very serious including anaphylactic shock. The RAST test confirms this by detecting the antibody (like IgE). Common foods associated with a genetic hereditary allergy are: cow’s milk, soy, nuts, eggs, strawberries, bananas, chocolate, wheat, peanuts, fish, crustaceans, beans and oranges.

Food intolerance / sensitivity – It involves any adverse reaction to food, but for which the role of the immune system is uncertain because standard tests seem negative. There are other tests, including those described in the daily mail, but the validity of many is questionable. (2)

So where does this 45% who have real problems like abdominal bloating, gas, diarrhea after eating a certain food come from? Additionally, according to the Allergy Clinic, scientific studies have suggested that intolerance can trigger or worsen the symptoms of a number of common conditions including asthma, joint and muscle pain, headache, migraine, sinusitis, hyperactivity, ADHD, chronic fatigue and Crohn & # 39; s disease. Possible sources of food intolerance

There is a strong suggestion that the increased permeability of the intestinal wall, known as intestinal permeability syndrome (LGS), is the basis of food intolerance. The basic premise behind LGS is that large molecules pass through the wall of the weak (leaky) intestine and enter the bloodstream. The Daily Mail (Tuesday March 7, 2006) contained an article called “The Allergy Fraud” by reporter Charlotte Dovey. After receiving a RAST test (a blood test indicating an allergy) from a Harley Street doctor, she was told that she did not suffer from food allergies. Then Ms. Dovey compared the RAST result with other various methods of detecting allergies from practitioners of alternative medicine. Or as the reporter said: he entered the “extravagant world of food intolerance tests”.

Now Ms. Dovey, to whom alternate practitioners said she was intolerant of a wide range of foods such as wheat, dairy and citrus fruits (when the RAST test showed no allergies) concludes: “If I had taken this advice, my diet it could be dangerous. Basics such as wheat, gluten, sugar and lactose are fundamental elements. “(However, I believe it is a wrong statement since I have personally seen incredible transformations by people who give up two commonly considered intolerances: wheat and dairy product.)
